Salomon has many models: what is the difference?

The Salomon range at Noble Store has now grown to ten models spread across three silhouettes and several sub-lines. Anyone looking to buy their first Salomon might find it hard to see the wood for the trees. XT-6, XT-6 Expanse, XT-6 Protective, XT-Whisper, GTX, Steel Streets: what does it all mean and which model is right for you? We explain each model.

The foundation: the Salomon XT-6

The XT-6 is the model with which Salomon definitively took its step into streetwear. It is a trail runner in the truest sense of the word: an aggressive Contagrip sole that provides grip on any surface, a Sensifit construction that securely wraps the foot, and a QuickLace system that lets you tighten it in seconds. The silhouette has mass, layering, and a recognizable profile that works just as well on the street as it does on a muddy path.

The classic XT-6 at Noble Store: Vanilla Ice / Black / Silver Cloud (€179.95) and Black Coffee / Burro / Bitter Chocolate (€180.00).

Choose the XT-6 if: you want the iconic Salomon silhouette in one of the strongest standard colorways.

XT-6 Expanse: same model, more sustainable materials

The XT-6 Expanse shares the silhouette and construction of the classic XT-6 but uses more sustainable materials in the upper. Visually, the two models are almost identical: the same Sensifit overlays, the same sole, the same profile. The difference lies in the choice of materials, not the design. The Expanse colorways at Noble Store are also slightly more affordable than the classic line.

At Noble Store: Earth Brown / White Pepper / Coyote Brown and Grisaille / Spellbound / Grisaille, both €165.00.

Choose the XT-6 Expanse if: you want the XT-6 silhouette with a more sustainable background, or if your budget is slightly lower.

XT-6 Protective: extra protection outside the city

The XT-6 Protective adds an extra protective treatment to the upper of the XT-6. This makes it more resistant to moisture and wear, making it more suitable for use beyond purely urban environments. The shoe looks no different from a standard XT-6: the extra is functional, not visual.

At Noble Store: Castlerock / Black / Paloma and Shadow Gray / Iron / Lilac Ash, both €179.95.

Choose the XT-6 Protective if: you want to wear the shoe in bad weather or light terrain without needing separate rain shoes.

XT-6 Steel Streets: the XT-6 for the city

The XT-6 Steel Streets is identical in construction to the classic XT-6 but features a colorway specifically designed for city life. It is not a separate technical line, but a deliberate positioning towards the urban lifestyle market. The model and the sole remain unchanged.

At Noble Store: Spellbound / Tradewinds / Dark Navy, €179.95.

Choose the XT-6 Steel Streets if: you specifically want a city colorway that does not hide its trail heritage.

XT-Whisper: a different silhouette

The XT-Whisper is not a variant of the XT-6 but a completely different model. Lower, sleeker, and more futuristic in character. Where the XT-6 has mass and layering, the XT-Whisper opts for a sleeker construction with TPU overlays that give the model an almost iridescent, technical look. A less aggressive sole, a more fashion-forward silhouette. The XT-Whisper is the Salomon for those who want to wear the brand but prefer not to have a shoe with maximum visual presence on their foot.

At Noble Store: Void Asphalt / Castlerock / Black (€159.95) and GTX Gray Violet / Black / Ftw Silver (€169.95).

Choose the XT-Whisper if: you want the Salomon DNA without the heavy XT-6 silhouette, or if you are looking for a more futuristic look.

XT-Pathway: the lightest and most functional model

The XT-Pathway is the most streamlined model in the Noble Store range. Sleeker, lighter, and more trail-oriented than the XT-6, but with a Gore-Tex membrane that makes it completely waterproof. The XT-Pathway has less visual mass than the XT-6 and a silhouette that leans closer to a functional running shoe. For those who primarily want to use Salomon as a walking or running shoe but also value a sleek look.

At Noble Store: Gore-Tex Alloy / Ftw Silver / Castlerock, €149.95.

Choose the XT-Pathway if: you want a lighter, more functional Salomon that also works really well on wet or uneven terrain.

GTX: what does it mean?

GTX stands for Gore-Tex, a waterproof yet breathable membrane that is incorporated into the shoe. Shoes with GTX keep water out while still allowing the foot to breathe. At Salomon, you will find GTX on the XT-Whisper GTX and the XT-Pathway Gore-Tex. For the Belgian autumn and winter, GTX is not a luxury but a practical choice if you also want to wear the shoe in the rain.
